Hello. If this is a network code bug, it is of interest
to kernel hackers. If not, I do apolgize.

We are now on a Class B network, and reach the internet through a
firewall proxy.

Before, when we were on a Class C, everything worked ok. Now,
Name lookups will not work. Name lookups with nslookup are ok,
but applications are broken.

Example:

IPADDR="10.2.3.13"
NETMASK="255.255.0.0"
NETWORK="10.2.0.0"
BROADCAST="10.2.255.255"
GATEWAY="10.2.1.254"

# ifconfig

inet addr:10.2.3.13 Bcast:10.2.255.255 Mask:255.255.0.0

RX packets:198277 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
TX packets:73503 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0

# netstat -rn

# nslookup ftp.uu.net

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: ftp.uu.net
Address: 192.48.96.9

- -HOWEVER-
if I try to use any client to go to a site by hostname,
it fails. This behaviour is limited to the Linux machines.
The Sun (solaris), Macs, Windows, and Win95 do not have this problem.
Note that as long as I use IP addresses, everything works.
Note also, that my nameservers and our general TCP/IP situation are
working just fine.

I believe that it's a bug, but I hope I've made a mistake. But the fact
is, this works on the Sparcs and the Mac's and the Windows's.
I wonder if there really is anyone else using a Class B with
their router masked on a C. To repeat, my problem is not routing
or connectivity, my problem is that Linux will not resolv names
in this configuration, while the other systems do. Tested on
several different boxes.
