as error

in configuring kernel 2.0, make config, make dep and make clean all work
fine. however, make menuconfig and make, after working for a minute or
so, return the following error:

as: unrecognized option '-Qy'

make returns this error shortly after entering the /dev/char directory.

i assume i've made some elementary error or i'm missing a file or
files. any help?
