Truncated core file?

I've got GDB 1.4 built for Linux ELF, and am able to read core files
from small programs (e.g. main(){*(char*)0=0;}) without a problem.
However, when a larger program of mine (300 text, 100k data, 100k bss)
core dumps, the core file is only 250k or so (the same size as from
the small program) and when gdb reads it I get the following error:

"/automount/nfs/then/files5/common.build-users/pjd/EmuTest1/core" is not a core dump: File truncated

Other particulars:

ulimit -c is unlimited
the binary is statically linked with libc 5.2.18
short core files occur on both 1.2.13 and 1.3.85
binary compiled with gcc 2.7.2, linked with ld 2.6

I've checked http://netrom.com/~soul and Jared's victim page, and
didn't find anything. Any ideas?

Thanks,
