Hmmm, check out the `totem' package,
ftp://ftp.linpeople.org/pub/Software/Modules/totem-2.0.1.tar.gz. It's an
alternate approach, it loads as a module which is fairly
release-independent, and allows you to get a release `totem' (i.e., symbolic
animal) by:

cat /proc/totem

In addition, it's a very well-documented example of how to write a small
kernel module with a /proc interface, and it logs a tasteful one-line header
when it comes up.... :)

Kernel 2.0.0, according to totem, is:

Zen Penguin on Endorphins

I think that speaks for itself.

:)
