booting linux

My linux 1.2.13 has been running fine until this morning. I noticed
a lot of hard disk activity going on with no application other than X-
windows ruuning. Shutting down X-Windows did not change it so I
decided to shutdown and reboot the machine.

On reboot, it goes as far as :
VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) readonly.
and hangs. I've made several reboot attempts but still won't go
beyond this point.

What did I do wrong? What did I not do? What should I do to get it
working again?

Please help.
