What happened to the AIC7xxx driver in 1.3.9?

I have an ADAPTEC 2940W and since I installed 1.3.96 ( I skipped some
Versions before) my 8 bit Devices, CD.-ROM, Syquest, DAT, QIC-TAPE,
don't work anymore. Every time I try to access these devices, the
SCSI-BUS locks up and the whole System hangs.
Without accessing the 8-bit devices my 2 G wide-Barracuda is running
fine.

1.3.75 works without any Problems
