I've noticed the same thing with PPP between my two machines at home. I don't think
that it's a bad cable--everything else works just fine. It's just ftp. The transfers
start out ok but the speed quickly degrades to a lathargic 50 bps or so. Although the
system on the other end is a Mac, I've used the ppp driver on it extensively and have
had no problems before now. I also have no problems with my modem connection to my
isp--I just notice the problems on the local net. I'm on kernel 1.3.88.
