"Ouch, kerneld timed out, message failed"

Just got an "ouch" from kerneld. I've looked in the kerneld mini-HOWTO
and there's no reference to this. (4-Mar-96 version of mini-HOWTO.)
I've looked in the manpage. That doesn't mention it either.
What is kerneld actually complaining about with this message?
