Kernel 1.3.69 question

Okay this is probably the wrong place to post this but I feel it is
related. I recently upgraded to 1.3.69, though I still have an image
of files with 1.2.13 on another partition.

The problem is I can no longer open the CDROM to swap disks. I can
mount and umount the /cdrom but the door is locked somehow. Is this a
kernel "feature" or am I missing an unlock command somewhere?
