1.3.68 and emacs problem

I'm not sure why, but the arrow keys in emacs
print characters with a "beep":
A(with beep) == up arrow
B(with beep) == down arrow
D(with beep) == left arrow
C(with beep) == right arrow

This occurs when the system is up for at least
a couple of hours.
