386 kernel boot problem.

I'm having a small problem getting my kernel to work on a 386 SX 40mhz
machine we have on our LAN. To save time, we're compiling the kernel on
our 486 DX 66mhz machines, and copying the zImage file over. We've
already made sure to take out any 486-specific optimizations and any
other options we can think of that might be causing the problem.

When we copy the zImage to /vmlinuz on the 386, run Lilo again, and
reboot, we get

LILO Loading linux......
Uncompressing Linux...

internal error, invalid method

--- System halted
---end

When I make a simple boot disk using the kernel that refuses to load, and
try to boot the 386 with it instead of Lilo, it works nicely. I'm not
sure if I'm doing something wrong with Lilo, compiling, or swapping
kernels. Suggestions?

I'd appreciate any suggestions anyone has to offer about this.
