This happens if you try to use ppp-2.2 with the "old" PPP kernel
interface (that one distributed with the kernel sources).
You have to "make kernel" in the ppp-2.2 source tree, then
rebuild your kernel and reboot.

Btw: Will the ppp-2.2 interface be integrated to the kernel?
