Oops, I forgot to mention some of the reasons why people might not want to
have LILO on the MBR:

- there's already something else, e.g. some menu-driven boot manager or
the "standard" MBR required by said boot manager
- they don't want to have to boot from the emergency boot floppy to "fix"
LILO whenever they've installed some new Microsoft problem
- they realize/suspect that their system will be unbootable (for a while)
if LILO fails, so they want to have something simpler on the MBR
