corruption of vt's with X (not cross contamination)

Well I'm posting this to the java list because I allready mentioned it
there/here. I just managed to sort the problem (for anyone that want's
to know, I just upgraded from XFree86-3.1.1 to 3.1.2 (elf), and whilst in
X, switching to a text vt there are thin (something like 1 pixel wide),
vertical wiggely lines, the X vt is fine. On exiting X, ALL the vt's
have dead strate thicker (about 3 pixels) lines). Loading a font fixes
the problem, so I think that X is messing up linux's fonts. I don't know
where these fonts are put, but I have a fealing that it's just loaded in
the right place, and then, hey presto, change of font ....
my setup is: kernel 1.3.29, video Mach64, Mach64 server, 1280x1024x8,
(virtual 1280x1024). Lots'a stuff ELF, lots'a stuff not (I'm getting
there). Anything else you want to know, just ask.
