pppstats causes kernel panic

the pppstats program from the linux ppp 2.2 development (and
more recently from the ppp 2.2 final release will consistantly kernel
panic me with:

kernel panic: math emulation needed in kernel

and syslogd has gotten (syslogd dumps *.* to a smart terminal):

math_emulate: 0010:00177e20

the panic only happens if I invoke pppstats with the -r or -c switches.
these panics have happened all across the 1.2.x and 1.3.x kernels (the
only ones I've tryed the ppp code in). I'm running on a 386/40 with no
math-coprocessor, but I ALWAYS compile math emulation into the kernel
(I've even recompiled after one of the panics to specificly make sure
that I compiled math emulation in. still paniced)

thoughts?
