Aha, the W32 server. I've been having similar problems for several
kernels (all 1.3.x as far as I can remember). The main problem for
me is that ctrl-alt-F? tries to switch vt, but then everything goes
black and the keyboard seems to freeze. Like you, I can still log in with
telnet. I've fixed things by killing the W32 server, and then running
the SVGA server so that things get back to normal.

I've not had time to investigate what's going on, so I just resigned
myself to running SVGA. Any clues anybody?

My setup:

kernel 1.3.27 (+ emergency patches), but all 1.3.x I can remember.
libc 5.2.7
gcc 2.7.0
XFree86 3.1.2
