I get similar problems when compiling support for the Western Digital
8xxx series Ethernet cards into the kernel, while leaving SMC Ultra
support as a module - the file 8390.c is not compiled with the kernel,
giving several undefined symbol errors at the end of compilation.
Turning off support completely for the SMC Ultra made everything work
again (which is fine, as I don't have that model anyway.)
