Seems *.ver is needed in ~/kernel. Making a sym link
~/include/linux/modules/ksyms.ver to ~/kernel/. did the trick for. I have
not pursued the matter further so it could well be something far more (or
less) exotic.
Ahh, to run the latest and greatest ...
