System Lockup with 1.3.16

I applied patches for Linux-1.3.16 tonight, and have seen some serious
problems.
1. After initial boot, and I attempt to login, there is a 20 second delay
before I get the # prompt. Anytime I log in/out after this all 'seems'
normal.
2. System locks solid if I enter X. No mouse pointer movement, no keys,
no nuthin.
I have a P5-120 Gateway with AHA2940 SCSI, and psaux mouse. I am running
XFree86-3.1.2.
