kmalloc problems with 1.3.13 and ppp-2.2b3

I am having the following problem when I try to run the new ppp beta
software. I start getting the following kernel messages:

Jul 30 08:12:22 m5 kernel: Problem: block on freelist at 0198e40c isn't free.

and the ppp performance is very erratic. ppp-2.2.2d runs just fine with
1.3.13. The ppp-2.2b3 just seems to be tickling a bug in my system.

My system configuration is: 486, 32Mb ram, gcc-2.70 (ELF) with libc-5.2.2.

Any help would be appreciated (as I go back now to 2.1.2d).
