Hi,

As promised here is a full review of this patch, focussing mainly
on the code aspect.

Phew, that took a long time, lots of small remarks, but nothing
major so I think this should be ready to go upstream after a
couple more revisions.

I think it would make more sense to to this in the class_dev
created in sysman_init() that way all the uevents come from a single dev
rather then from 2 different wmi-devices.

attribute_name and attribute_value store an utf16 string,
so IMHO it would be better to use "u16 *" as type here,
that also removes the need to multiply the return value
from utf8s_to_utf16s by 2, because when these are
u16 * then the pointer-arithmic of taking them + adding
the return value as is will correctly give a u16 * to
the end of the string.

Looking at the code below these 2 should be u16 *, not u8 *,
since you skip sizeof(u16) for the lengths. This happens to
work as long as length < 255, because you use kzalloc and x86
is little endian. But if we ever get values with a length > 255,
or for that matter userspace tries to set a value (for a string
attribute) with such a length then this will break.

Also maybe we should verify that the max_length for strings
always fits in an u16 ?

Maybe use " * sizeof(u16)" here instead of "*2", at least I assume
that that is where the * 2 is coming from? Note if you think you have

It seems to me that the strlen(wmi_priv.current_admin_password) > 0 check
belongs in populate_security_buffer(), just like calculate_security_buffer()
has this check.

And populate_security_buffer() should probably explicitly set the 2
u32 values to 0 if the check fails, rather then relying on the buffer
being pre-filled with zeros.

If you change the type of name_len to an u16 *
then this needs a cast:

You reserve strlen(a_name) wchar_t-s space, so instead of MAX_BUFF you
should pass strlen(a_name) note the maxlen attribute is expressed in
wchar_t-s not in bytes.

Also as you check below utf8s_to_utf16s may return a negative error code,
but *name_len is an u8, so the error check below:

Will never be true, since you have truncated e.g. -EINVAL to some 0-255 value.
To preserve error codes here you should do 2 things:

1. Store the return value in "ret" and check ret, and then after the
check indicates there was no error, store ret in *name_len.
You can then also drop the ret = -EINVAL, so that you propagate the
actual error returned by utf8s_to_utf16s

2. To properly preserve the error code, you must also remove
the " * 2" as mentioned above already if you change the type of
attribute_name to an "u16 *" then the * 2 is not necessary.

Also about the dev_err in the error handling, this dev_err should use
&wmi_priv.bios_attr_wdev->dev (you use that above for the -ENODEV check).

Buf is declared as a const char * so you should not modify it,
I'm somewhat surprised that the compiler did not catch this.

The caller is not expecting the contents of buf to change and
there is no guarantee that in the future the kernel will not call this
with a read-pnly mapped page as buf, so you really must not modify
buf here. I can understand the desire to deal with a possible extra
'\n' here rather then in various places, this means that you will need
to kstrdup the buffer.

while calculate_security_buffer() does not ? That is not consistent.
