Early console confusion

Can somebody explain the differences between

	earlycon=uart,...
	earlycon=uart8250,...
	earlyprintk=serial,...
	console=uart,...
	console=uart8250,...

I'm not really convinced we need them all, and it's getting a
little confusing.
