Nonetheless the latency tracing still doesn't work for me on x86_64.
It compiles but hotplug starts to segfault in an infinite loop during
booting up. When I disable CONFIG_LATENCY_TRACE, it works.
hm, it does work for me. I had trouble in the past with gcc & mcount on
x64. This version seems to work fine for me:
gcc version 3.4.0 20040129 (Red Hat Linux 3.4.0-0.3)
I have:
gcc (GCC) 3.4.4 20050314 (prerelease) (Debian 3.4.3-13.0.0.1.gcc4)
I have also tried with:
gcc-3.3 (GCC) 3.3.5 (Debian 1:3.3.5-12.0.0.1.gcc4)
It made no difference.
Maybe I'll try vanilla GCC 3.4.4.
also, could you try disabling hotplug (and module support too)? Maybe
something in that area breaks.
OK, I'll try to minimise my .config.
I've attached a .config that works for me.

# CONFIG_LATENCY_TRACE is not set
Are you sure this is the right .config?
