Problem with irqrouting and resume

From: Martin Josefsson
Date: Sun Dec 19 2004 - 11:41:48 EST

Hi

I have a small problem with newer kernels on my laptop, an IBM X31.
The problem is that the e1000 interface doesn't work after I've resumed
from suspend to disk. This used to work fine until recently, not sure
which kernel broke it. suspend-to-ram still works.

The interface works fine after a normal boot but after resume from a
suspend-to-disk session I only get one interrupt per 8 seconds, which is
a little bit more sluggish than I'd like.

I've been able to narrow it down to what I believe is irqrouting
problems. The problem goes away if I append pci=routeirq , then resume
from suspend-to-disk works just fine.

I've compared dmesg output from both "normal" boot/resume and
pci=routeirq boot/resume. You'll find four attachments to this mail.

1. dmesg output from a boot/resume with a non routeirq boot.
2. A diff between #1 and the routeirq boot/resume dmesg
3. lspci -vvx from a non routeirq resume
4. A diff between #3 and the routeirq resume lspci -vvx

What I can see that differs is that pci=routeirq assigns all irqs during
kernel initialization, non routeirq does this on driver init.

And a resume from suspend-to-disk boots the kernel as normal and then
resumes the system from the swapdevice and then assigns some irq stuff
as well. So with routeirq we get irq initialization before the actual
resume and then the normal irq stuff during resume.
Without routeirq we don't get the initialization during kernel init,
only the irq stuff during resume and here something's missing if you
look at the lspci diff between non routeirq and routeirq lspci after
resume, one field of the pci configspace is diffrent, before suspend
everything is the same.

I don't know anything about the irq stuff in the kernel, I hope you have
a clue or know who I should hunt down.

If you have any ideas/tests/patches just let me know and I'll test it.
