framebuffer freeze on 2.6.9?

hi,

i've built 2.6.9 from mainline source, and as soon as my framebuffer
comes up (according to the boot messages i see) the whole thing locks up
hard.

the framebuffers in question are controlfb and atyfb. atyfb is device 0,
and controlfb is set to 1. 

at boot, i see atyfb messages
then i see controlfb messages.

no warnings or anything it just sits there glaring at me.
