Major problems with USB Mass-Storage device

When trying to mount disks in my HP DVD200E USB/Firewire (connected via USB 2.0) writer:

I can confirm that the DVD I am trying to mount works fine in my Samsung SD-610 DVD-ROM drive, which is /dev/hdd.

When attempting to read files on any DVD, I get errors similar to:

ehci_hcd 0000:00:09.3: devpath 1 ep2in 3strikes

I am also seeing seek errors when playing MP3s that are stored on this DVD.
