NFS problem with recent 2.6 kernels (also serial console weirdness)

Hello, I have an x86_64 NFS server with a 32-bit userspace (debian
woody+backports as necessary) that starts to refuse mount requests after
a while (sometimes no time at all), The symptom from the client side
(tested with Linux 2.6, and Solaris 9) is this:

mount: RPC: Unable to receive; errno = Connection refused

Clients that have already mounted their directories have no problem
accessing them.

rpcinfo -p for the server shown nothing out of the ordinary:

program vers proto port
100000 2 tcp 111 portmapper
100000 2 udp 111 portmapper
100021 1 udp 32769 nlockmgr
100021 3 udp 32769 nlockmgr
100021 4 udp 32769 nlockmgr
100021 1 tcp 32768 nlockmgr
100021 3 tcp 32768 nlockmgr
100021 4 tcp 32768 nlockmgr
100024 1 udp 32794 status
100024 1 tcp 32789 status
100003 2 udp 2049 nfs
100003 3 udp 2049 nfs
100003 2 tcp 2049 nfs
100003 3 tcp 2049 nfs
100005 1 udp 32795 mountd
100005 1 tcp 32790 mountd
100005 2 udp 32795 mountd
100005 2 tcp 32790 mountd
100005 3 udp 32795 mountd
100005 3 tcp 32790 mountd

I can get the server to come back by doing a magic incantation:

/etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server stop; /etc/init.d/nfs-common stop;
/etc/init.d/portmap restart; /etc/init.d/nfs-common start;
/etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server start

After doing this I can typically mount somewhere between 0 and several
dozen mounts before it stops working again. The clients mount about 34
directories; if a client reboots I can expect to have to do this 3 or 4
times to get them all mounted. These are v3 UDP mounts, the client mount
options are:

rw,nosuid,nodev,hard,intr,bg,rsize=8192,wsize=8192

The server export options are sync,rw and sometimes no_root_squash.
Currently I'm running 2.6.7-rc3-bk4 plus these two patches:

http://www.uwsg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0406.1/0996.html
http://www.uwsg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0406.1/0889.html

Previously I had the same problem with 2.6.5 plus the patch to
dm-ioctl.h to allow 32-bit compatibility. Dmesg and .config are below
for the most recent kernel. Unfortunately this is a production machine
so I can't boot lots of kernels to test it.

The other weird thing I have seen is with the serial console. After
init loads the net bonding module and the network comes up, the serial
console output stops, as though I had typed ^s. If I type a character
(doesn't seem to matter what), instead of that character printing I see
the next character of console output. I have to hold down a key for a
few seconds to get the next few lines of output, then it starts printing
on its own again. I've seen this with 2.6.7-rc3-bk4 and 2.6.6, not with
2.6.5 (I booted 2.6.6 by accident yesterday, I don't know how it does
with NFS).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please keep me CC:d as I'm not
subscribed to the list.
