Linux 2.6 no boot report

I've successfully run Linux kernel 2.6 on several boxes, with the exception
of the Dell PowerEdge 2600:
The box is:
. dual Xeon
. Fusion SCSI controler
. root partition is software RAID 1
. Intel pro 1000 ethernet

It fails with all 2.6 kernel I tried, including the fresh 2.6.4
No error message at all, the machine just freezes after displaying network
protocols and before displaying VFS root mounting message.
