In fact, make that

        ln tmp/x peek/x
                        <- MTA does the fsync()
        less peek/x
                        <- MTA closes the file.
        rm peek/x
                     (peek gets written asynchronously to disk)
        *CRASH*

Then we are back to "lost+found", nothing gained.
