I have some more information on the Toshiba DVD-RAM problem:
I get a 'no medium' error when I try to format a DVD-RAM. A regular CDROM
in the same drive works fine.

Setting debug in /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/debug issues the following error
when I try to format a blank DVD-RAM disk.

Sep 29 07:53:14 gonzo4 kernel: cdrom: open failed.
Sep 29 07:54:14 gonzo4 kernel: cdrom: entering cdrom_open
Sep 29 07:54:14 gonzo4 kernel: cdrom: entering open_for_data
Sep 29 07:54:14 gonzo4 kernel: cdrom: drive_status=2
Sep 29 07:54:14 gonzo4 kernel: cdrom: the tray is open...
Sep 29 07:54:14 gonzo4 kernel: cdrom: trying to close the tray.
Sep 29 07:54:14 gonzo4 kernel: cdrom: bummer. the tray is still not
closed.
Sep 29 07:54:14 gonzo4 kernel: cdrom: tray might not contain a medium.
Sep 29 07:54:14 gonzo4 kernel: cdrom: open failed.
Sep 29 07:54:14 gonzo4 kernel: cdrom: door unlocked.
Sep 29 07:54:14 gonzo4 kernel: cdrom: Use count for "/dev/sr0" now 0

I have been trying to get my Toshiba DVD-RAM SD-W1111 to work with linux
kernel 2.2.16.

The drive is recognized by the adaptec controller:

and is recognized by cdrecord:

and I can mount and read regular cdroms so I am pretty sure that the drive
is OK and the device name is OK,

but when I try to format a blank DVD-RAM disk I get:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
[root@gonzo4 /]# mke2fs /dev/scd0
mke2fs 1.18, 11-Nov-1999 for EXT2 FS 0.5b, 95/08/09
/dev/scd0 is entire device, not just one partition!
Proceed anyway? (y,n) y
mke2fs: No medium found while trying to determine filesystem size
[root@gonzo4 /]#
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Even though there is a disk in the drive.

Any help you can give would be great...

Thanks!
