It's the kernel which is screwed up, not the compiler. The kernel uses
gcc-specific (even version-specific) hacks all over the place.

gcc-2.96 isn't yet (and perhaps won't ever be), and it is just a step
towards gcc-3.0, which _is_ a large change.
