PROBLEM: Kernel (2.4.0-test7) hangs when haevy load on EXT2 volume on a compaq SMART/2 Array

From: Kurt.Stempina@RSD.rohde-schwarz.com
Date: Mon Sep 11 2000 - 08:11:58 EST

[1.] Kernel 2.4.0-test7 hangs when heavy load is produced on the EXT2
filesystem on a Compaq SMART/2 RAID array.

[2.] The problem occurs to 99 percent when unpacking a tar file (here it
was the SAMBA-2.0.7 package and also the installation of StarOffice 5.2).
It seems that especially creating lots of small files causes this behaviour
whereas copying one 600 MB file works without any problems. The hang
doesn't occur directly when writing the files but a little later when a
read operation is performed (may be only when this read is from the same
filesystem - i couldn't really ensure this).

[3.] ext2-filesystem, compaq smart/2 array, compaq ProLiant1850R

[4.]
Linux version 2.4.0-test7 (root@tuxtest.1sp1.rsd.de) (gcc version
egcs-2.91.66 19990314 (egcs-1.1.2 release)) #2 SMP Wed Sep 6 18:54:57 CEST
2000

[5.] No OOPS message produced. Kernel hangs without messages (no OOPS, no
entry in "messages"-file, etc.)

[6.] Unpack a big tar-archive to a ext2 filesystem and do a serveral read
operations afterwards.

[7.5.] PCI-Information:
(See attached file: pciinfo.txt)

[7.6.] SCSI-Information:
SCSI not installed (Controller available but not used and no kernel driver
present!)

[7.7.]
The filesystem I discoverd the bug on was mounted as "/usr". Kernel
compiling in "/usr/src/linux" never hung the system but unpacking a simple
tar/tgz did ??!??
ATM-Drivers are activated (for FORE PCA-200E card) but the bug occurs also
with the "normal" TI-Thunderlan driver activated. It seems to be
independent from the network functionality.
Quota is enabled but not for the "/" partition and the "/usr" partition
where the bug took place. But there is one message during quota
initialization (when system boots up) that could effect the bug. It is:

Sep 11 14:42:27 tuxtest kernel: bug: kernel timer added twice at c01b6808.
Sep 11 14:43:57 tuxtest kernel: bug: kernel timer added twice at c01b6808.
Sep 11 14:44:11 tuxtest kernel: bug: kernel timer added twice at c01b6808.

The number of these messages differs each system startup (and quota init). In the running system the messages never return.

I hope I did everything right with this bug report, it's my first one...
I'am open to test every change to the kernel on our ProLiant 1850R system
as it is not in our production network at the moment but in test state.

Thank you all very much for making LINUX that pretty good system that it
is.
