I have the same problem, but without the gnome / kde variable. When I
try to use cdrdao to read-cd, I get these same (or very similar)
errors. I was able to read a cd just fine if I used "modprobe
sym53c8xx sym53c8xx=mpar:n" to disable parity error checking, but that
was only in 2.2.16(SMP). In 2.4.0-test5(SMP), I had no luck at all.
One potential issue w/ my situation is that I am running SMP. Is this
still an issue w/ sym53c8xx?
