You probably have CONFIG_MODVERSIONS enabled and i386_ksyms.ver probably
didn't make it into include/linux/modversions.h due to a race in make
(not even a parallel make).

I've been using the attached patch with good luck in 2.4 and 2.2 to get
around this. Before using this patch, about 2/3 of the time
modversions.h was not correctly constructed, and I would get insmod
problems.
