Please, consider the following approach instead:
- add sufficient instrumentation to your architecture and boot loader
to load some initrd with your kernel
- make an initrd with, say, rz on it
- use this initrd to construct the initrd you're really going to use
- switch over to the new initrd using pivot_root
Advantages:
- no kernel hack needed
- you can use a real protocol, with error detection, sliding windows,
etc., e.g. Kermit or Zmodem
- you can also use a different destination than initrd, e.g. ramfs
may be more desirable
