Not really. Or maybe I should say, not necessarily.

Make it so that the magic doesn't get invoked unless you actually try to
handle the stuff as a directory. That is, "ls bla.tar" shows a file, and
"ls bla.tar/" shows the directory. Or the error, if nothing recognizes the
data type.
