You can configure your X server for different modes as well.

P.S

  I discovered that you in theory you could change a consoles mode via
/dev/tty with the TIOCSWINSZ. In tty_io.c all it does is send a signal to
all process on this tty that the video is to change. It doesn't :-(

Q: Why did they deprecate a.out support in linux?
A: Because a nasty coff is bad for your elf.
