Same here on 2.2.17pre6 after exiting from acroread4. Heavy disk
activity and desktop freeze, no reaction on keyboard (though I didn't try
Alt-SysRq).

Then I decided to shutdown via the jslaunchd button.
It's a Athlon 700 on a Gigabyte 7IXE, pgcc-compiled 2.2.17pre6 without
ide-patch (but some others).
