Booting from floopy w/later kernel version

I have a bootable floppy with kernel 2.2.16 on it, set to look at my
primary hard drive using rdev
(rdev kernel /dev/rd/c0d0p1). All the drivers are compiled in, not modules.
Can I use it to successfully boot a primary hard drive that is running
kernel 2.2.14 (same driver set), or do I need to recompile 2.2.14 on my
source machine?
