Ok, thanks for your advice concerning changing SHMMAX during runtime; but
concerning reserving memory I have to say, that we want to fix the amount of
memory which could be allocated by the database. Is this possible (I know about
the disadvantages)?

Reason: we have got database running on HP-UX (about 1000 simultaneous users)
and we reserved 800 MB for database on the HP-machine; now we like to test, if
it is possible to run this database (with testusers) on Linux (same amount of
RAM reserved for database).

Thanks so far, DIetmar
