Hey, we're not rejecting a free ride that is fun! :-]
I'm not having problems with the "original stop-gap" 2.2.16 and the
patch Mr. Krzysztofowicz had posted.
The patches I have used are at
http://home.pages.de/~mandree/kernelpatches/v2.2/v2.2.16/, along with
MD5 in case you want to check.
Working configurations here:
* some intel + IBM DPTA (UDMA/33 did not work a while ago, did not
recheck since, somehow this machine still does >10 MB/s with hdparm -t)
* AMD Viper + some Seagate drive (UDMA/33)
* several intel PIIX4 + Seagate (UDMA/33)
* VIA VT82C586B + WDC AC420400D (UDMA/33) + old WDC31200F (slow DMA)
* ALi M1543 + IBM DTTA 351010 (UDMA/33).
