OK, I suspect I know what the problem is. Instead of trying to access
the device via the /dev/discs hierarchy, go directly to the /dev/ide
hierarchy. So try accessing something like:
/dev/ide/host0/bus1/target1/lun0/disc

and tell me what happens.
