Look at Loki's installer for an example of how a lot of this can be
done portably --- they even register their games on the appropriate
Gnome and KDE menus. There is plenty of stuff out there which does
a pretty good job of being distribution-neutral. The lack of a single
universal package management tool is a shame, but tools like "alien"
let you overcome even that.
