web server (and TCP) performance tuning?

I'm new to Linux and am in the process of trying to
performance tune an experimental web server. It's a
select-based server that was written elsewhere, and
I'm trying to port it.

Basically, I need to deal with thousands of file
descriptors, thousands of TCP connections, etc.
I've compiled a kernel with modified values for
FD_SETSIZE, NR_OPEN, OPEN_MAX, INR_OPEN, and NR_FILE.

Does anyone know of a document explaining what network
characteristics need to be changed and how to do it?
If not, could you make some suggestions on where to start?

Thanks,
Lucius Chang
