Hi, Good Day,

Here is the output of an oops. The person experiencing the oops is not
currently able to boot, so we cannot run ksymoops. (Maybe we'll try a
toms root/boot disk to run the ksymoops)

Here's what we have:

______________________________________________________________________________

-------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,

1. The operating system is Mandrake Linux v6.0.
2. The error message is complex, takes a full screen: here goes -

  current -> tss.cr3 = 00101000, %cr3 = 00101000
*pde = 00000000
Ooops: 0000
CPU: 0
EIP: 0010:[<c010a0cd]>
EFLAGS: 00010046

..... (a lot of other stuff that I'll give you if you want)

Code: 8a 04 0b 89 44 24 38 43 50 68 b0 58 1c c0 e8 5c 9a 00 00 83
Aiee, killing interrupt handler
Kernel panic: Attempted to kill the idle task!
In swapper task - not syncing

3. This is a Pentium II, 64 MB memory, 300 mHz. The configuration is
odd!
There is a BusLogic SCSI card that is not terminated. There are two
internal hard drives, the last of which is terminated (Quantum Fireball,
and
IBM DAL drives. The IBM is terminated). There is an external Castlewood
ORB
2.2 GB removable hard drive that is also terminated.
The SCSI ID numbers are 0-0: ORB 2.2 GB removable drive
1-0: Quantum 2.1 GB hard drive
2-0: IBM DAL 560 MB hard drive
                        4-0: Toshiba CD-ROM

4. Here is the crux of the problem: The Quantum drive is formatted
FAT-16.
If I disconnect the power to it, I can boot the installation floppy,
read
the CD and carry through with a complete installation. Then I can reboot
and
start X without problems. However - if I leave the Quantum drive powered
up,
the system crashes with the message given above. It performs the same
crash
if I try to do an installation with the Quantum drive hooked up.

5. NT v4, Windows 2000, TurboLinux v6.0, and RedHat v 5.1 have
absolutely no
problem with this setup. They all boot from the ORB drive without
problems.
(Those are, of course, different ORB 2.2 GB diskettes, one for each
operating system).

I hope I have given you enough of the pertinent information. This has
been
going on since February 2000. I have tried every combination of BIOS
parameters and Host Adapter parameters, without success. Can you help
me?

If someone needs to talk with me, I can be reached from 0600 to 2200,
every day at 310-476-6988, or by e-mail at "holroyd_sills@hotmail.com".

Thanks for any help you can provide.

At 06/03/2000 01:30 PM you wrote - Hi,

I have a suggestion for why I'm having this problem. If you agree,
maybe
we can focus on that. My Quantum drive (the one that crashes Mandrake
Linux
when powered on) used to be a C: drive, before I cabled in the ORB
drive. It
is still seen as the C: drive under NT. Might there be some problem with
the
MBR that interferes with installing or running Mandrake Linux? If so,
how
might I fix that?

Remember, many other operating systems run under the same setup,
including
two different Linux OS. Just a thought.

Thanks,
