abs() and gcc

Earlier today there was an email about gcc and using abs()
in the kernel. I don't recall which thread that was in.
Can someone point me to it please?

Several drivers use abs() [without #defines].
Should they not be doing this?

drivers/video/clgenfb.c #defines abs().
drivers/video/riva/riva_hw.c #defines ABS().
include/linux/ftape.h #defines ABS().

Thanks,
Randy
