that will break all the references to arch-specific code in all books
written about Linux *without* absolutely any advantages. everyone knows
that i386 is not just 386 - it is used in other flavours of UNIX also to
designate IA32. Using i386 is nicely consistent with the conventions used
by other utilities - gcc, ld etc.
