I got it work with old ifconfig too. Netmask 255.255.255.255 does the
trick (thanks to Meelis Roos):

ifconfig eth0:1 1.2.3.4 netmask 255.255.255.255
ifconfig eth0:2 1.2.3.5 netmask 255.255.255.255
ifconfig eth0:1 down

eth0:2 stays up and running. I don't know is it fixed already or not but
using ifconfig with -broadcast flag doesn't unset IFF_BROADCAST flag.
Anyway I haven't seen no problems with it.
