Adding a new source file to kernel source

Hi,

I plan to add a new source file to the Linux kernel source.
I would like it to compile with the Linux kernel source when
I am rebuilding the kernel. I have nested the changes inside the current
kernel within #defines. How do I do this elegantly ?

Is there a HOWTO on how to add new source code to the kernel ?
Are there any guidelines stating good practices of doing this ?

If some one can give me some pointers regarding this it will be
much appreciated.

Thank you
Ravi
