I have the same problems on 2.3.99-pre9-3 during stress test (Also RH
6.1 based, egcs-2.91.66 19990314/Linux (egcs-1.1.2 release). And sorry
gcc 2.7.2.3 is way too old). It never happend til yesterday and I did
the same tests for month now.

Under heavy memory stress testing I got:

May 22 15:33:12 localhost kernel: eth0: can't fill rx buffer (force 0)!
May 22 15:33:16 localhost kernel: VM: killing process ipctst
May 22 15:33:40 localhost last message repeated 2 times
May 22 15:49:33 localhost last message repeated 4 times
May 22 15:58:46 localhost kernel: VM: killing process ipctst
May 22 16:43:18 localhost kernel: eth0: can't fill rx buffer (force 0)!
May 22 16:43:21 localhost kernel: eth0: can't fill rx buffer (force 0)!
May 22 16:43:24 localhost kernel: eth0: can't fill rx buffer (force 1)!
May 22 16:43:45 localhost kernel: eth0: card reports no resources.
May 22 16:44:10 localhost last message repeated 6 times
May 22 16:45:43 localhost last message repeated 17 times
May 22 16:46:49 localhost last message repeated 14 times
May 22 16:47:52 localhost last message repeated 13 times
May 22 16:48:57 localhost last message repeated 15 times
May 22 16:50:09 localhost last message repeated 9 times
May 22 16:52:11 localhost last message repeated 15 times
May 22 16:53:37 localhost last message repeated 34 times
May 22 16:55:07 localhost last message repeated 21 times
May 22 16:56:10 localhost last message repeated 10 times
May 22 16:57:06 localhost last message repeated 14 times
May 22 16:58:51 localhost last message repeated 23 times
May 22 16:59:43 localhost last message repeated 11 times
May 22 17:01:15 localhost last message repeated 16 times
May 22 17:02:32 localhost last message repeated 17 times
May 22 17:02:33 localhost last message repeated 3 times
eth0: 0 multicast blocks dropped.

(The last message only shows up in dmesg, syslogd did not capture
it. I think it was issued when I said 'ifconfig eth0 down'.)

This looks like some wrong handled oom situation for me (The latest
kernels are a very good tester for that ;-).
